Welcome to Mind - Body - Dog

Owner Shawn Kay, was born with a love for animals. As a child growing up in Hollywood, California, she cared for numerous pets including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, fish and even a rat.
After working in the music business in Los Angeles for several years Shawn relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. While there Shawn heard about the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, TN (www.elephants.com) and signed up to volunteer. After falling in love with the elephants, the organization and their cause, Shawn completed a 6-week internship at the Sanctuary after which she accepted a job as a caregiver to 3 African Elephants, Tange, Zula and Flora. She was living her dream; working with one of the world’s most magnificent animals.
After two years working at the Elephant Sanctuary, the hard labor began taking a physical toll. Shawn sadly said goodbye to the elephants and her friends at the sanctuary and moved back to the west coast with her husband, 2 cats and 3 dogs. Shawn became certified in Small Animal Massage through the Northwest School of Animal Massage (www.nwsam.com) and began working as a veterinary technician first at a holistic vet clinic and then at Back On Track Veterinary Rehabilitation clinic. (www.backontrackvetrehab.com). It was there, that Shawn learned about various rehabilitation modalities and gained her experience working with disabled animals and animals with mobility or neurological issues.
In 2007, after realizing there was a need for specialized in-home pet care, Shawn started Mind Body Dog, an in-home pet care business specializing in disabled pets, pets with special needs or those recovering from surgery. Shawn is also working toward her certification in dog training, working with Behave Canine Solutions (www.behavetraining.com) as an assistant.
When Shawn isn’t caring for her client’s pets, she keeps busy by caring for her own 4 dogs, 3 cats and 2 ferrets. She is a supporter of numerous animal welfare organizations and is active in animal rescue and conservation groups across the globe. Please visit the Resources page for links of interest and Shawn’s Blog for more information on animal welfare issues.
